Mahjong in Atlanta: Learn & Play at Felix’s Thursday Nights

Mahjong is having a moment . . and honestly, we get it.

Maybe you've seen the tiles popping up on your social feed. Maybe a friend suddenly owns a Mahjong set. Maybe you've walked past a table full of people clicking tiles, laughing, getting suspiciously competitive and wondered, What exactly is happening here?

The answer: Mahjong. And you might be next.

The centuries-old Chinese tile game is finding a whole new generation of players, and every Thursday night, we're bringing the game to Felix's Atlanta.

Whether you already know your way around the tiles or have absolutely no idea what a Dragon, Dot or Bamboo is, there's a seat for you.

Wait... Isn't Mahjong an Old Game?

Very old.

Mahjong originated in China and has been played for generations, spreading around the world and developing different styles and traditions along the way.

But old doesn't mean outdated.

Part strategy, part luck and very social, Mahjong has everything you want from a great game night. You have to pay attention, make decisions, watch what everyone else is doing — and occasionally watch your perfectly brilliant plan fall apart because somebody grabbed the tile you needed.

That's part of the fun.

And lately, Mahjong has been attracting plenty of new players.

Why Is Everybody Playing Mahjong?

Maybe because we're all getting a little tired of staring at our phones.

Think about some of the things people are gravitating toward right now: trivia nights, book clubs, run clubs, game nights and other activities that give us an actual reason to get together.

Mahjong fits right into that.

You sit around a table. You learn something. You talk. You laugh. You compete. You order another drink. You meet somebody you might not otherwise have met.

And once you start understanding what those tiles actually mean?

It gets addictive fast.

There is always another hand to play, another strategy to try and another chance to redeem yourself after making a spectacularly questionable decision.

Sounds pretty appropriate for Felix's, actually.

It's Basically the Anti-Doomscroll

There is something wonderfully old-school about sitting around a table and playing an actual game with actual people.

For a couple of hours, your attention isn't on whatever terrible thing the algorithm has decided you need to see next.

It's on the tiles.

And the people sitting across from you.

That's one of the things we love about bringing Mahjong to Felix's.

Felix's has always been about more than coming in, ordering a drink and leaving. We're a neighborhood bar. People come here to talk, laugh, meet somebody new and become part of the wonderfully eclectic collection of characters that makes this place what it is.

Mahjong gives us one more reason to gather around a table together.

Yes, You Can Come Alone

Actually, we encourage it.

Walking into a bar alone can sometimes feel awkward.

Walking into Mahjong night alone just means you're a player looking for a table.

That's a big part of why we love this event.

You don't need to round up four friends before you come. You don't need a date. You don't need a Mahjong partner.

Show up.

Grab a drink.

Meet some people.

Find your table.

By the end of the night, you may have a whole new Mahjong crew.

"But I Have Absolutely No Idea How to Play."

Perfect.

Seriously.

Felix's Mahjong League isn't designed only for people who already know the game.

Every Thursday, Candace and Master Mitch are here, and Master Mitch will help teach new players the basics of Chinese Mahjong and get you playing.

You don't need to study beforehand.

You don't need to buy a set.

And you definitely don't need to pretend you know what you're doing.

We'll teach you.

If you'd rather get a head start before your first night, we're also putting together our Beginner's Guide to Chinese Mahjong so you can learn the basics before you arrive.

But homework is absolutely not required.

Mahjong, But Make It Felix's

Naturally, we're not trying to turn Felix's into a silent game parlor.

This is still Felix's.

There are drinks.

There is laughter.

There will be competition.

There will probably be questionable decisions.

And somebody will eventually become far more emotionally invested in a tiny rectangular tile than they ever expected.

That's the point.

Our Mahjong League is supposed to be social first — a place for experienced players to get a game going and complete beginners to discover why so many people have fallen in love with Mahjong.

No pressure. No cover. No need to know what you're doing before you walk through the door.
